Bored with the look of your home? Can’t remember the last time you got a new sofa? Art seen better days? While a total makeover would be great, let’s face it, it may not always be an option. Whatever your home’s needs are, there are lots of easy ways to spruce up your décor without spending tons of money. I’ve gathered a list of my favorite fast, easy and affordable ways to update your home. If you can’t renovate, rejuvenate! And remember—these tips can work for any room.

Without doubt, start with art. Refreshing your wall art can go a long way into updating your décor. Explore using smaller canvases or framed photos to create wall collages. Reframing existing art (though wait for a frame sale!) can be another way to give an updated feel to an entire space. You can even keep it super affordable by just rearranging your existing art pieces.

An even more affordable art idea is to keep your eyes open for ANYTHING that could be grouped together to create a wall art composition. I love fabric, decorative pillowcases, exotic clothes, purses—even baskets and dishes can become art when grouped together and hung on a wall.

Anytime you can replace standard home items with more unique pieces, the better. One of my favorite examples is replacing a standard bathroom mirror with a larger framed mirror or pair of mirrors for a more personalized look. Keeping your eyes peeled for these unique pieces on clearance can help you save.

Lighting can make or break a room. Adding affordable lamps to a space will immediately improve the look of your room (especially if you keep those overhead lights off). If you don’t have the budget for a lamp, well-placed clusters of pillar candles cast soft light creating a great ambiance (and save on electrical bills!).

Consider purchasing gorgeous drapery for one prominent window in a main room. Leave other windows blank or compliment with simpler, more affordable fabric, while the gorgeous drapery steals the show. In that same vein, splurging on something as simple as a colorful shower curtain can go a long way in a small bathroom.

Choose mostly solid-colored throw pillows. Not only will they be more affordable, they’ll be easier to coordinate throughout your whole house. Just don’t forget to splurge on one or two patterned or textured pillows for interest. Small and affordable throw blankets are another great way to add punches of color. In my house, I love to experiment with their placement: try over the back of a couch or chair, folded on the edge of an ottoman or even stacked in a basket.

If you don’t have the budget to replace or add large furniture pieces, go for side tables or affordable small ottomans. They’re not big enough to break your budget but they are substantial enough to add fun pops of color or interest (or even storage) into your space.

Baskets! Baskets! Baskets! A creative grouping of different sized or colored baskets is an easy way to create an affordable sculptural arrangement in a room—-not to mention extra storage for things like toys, throws and magazines. Big baskets can create groupings on the floor or in corners, and smaller baskets can create gorgeous tabletop displays (and give the appearance of an organized room by hiding all your stuff!).

Sometimes updating your space means really taking a look at the items in your rooms and deciding whether you really need or want any of them anymore. Eliminating some items and then selling them on Craiglist, eBay or at garage sales can leave you with more space in your room and extra cash in your wallet. I only add the things I really love to my spaces, you should too!
